The sun had set not too long ago, maybe an hour by the time in Harley's head. The tiny redhead was creeping around the old ruins, hoping to find somewhere to stay for the night. She had been middle class, but times change and you had to be street smart to survive. Luckily Harley knew of the old ruins, in fact her home used to be around here somewhere. Her stormy blue-gray eyes flickered in the gloom, watching for any signs of movement. Seeing none, she sprinted into the nearest building. It had a good roof on it, and there was bound to be a windowless room she could stow away in for the night. Once she was in the house, however, things grew nasty.
A flash of movement to her right alerted her of someone else in the building first. By the speed she could tell the other was a human like her, probably attempting to find some place to stay like she was. They were all in the same boat these days. Then that other person grabbed her hand, attempting to pull her into the darkness. Panic flared in Harley's eyes and she pulled back, her hair whipping with the movement. Her white cotton dress seemed to glow, reflecting the moon's light from an open window. There was no way she could hide here, she was too clearly visible. "Get off of me!" She growled, and with one swift movement lurched forward, sending her attacker flailing backward, and in that moment of disbalance, she gripped his wrist. Slightly proud of herself for this, her hopes soared until she saw something glinting by her face. Of course her attacker had made his way to his feet- and was holding some weapon at her.
Eyeing it uncertianly, she remained still, her eyes catching her reflection in the shine of the steel. Her face was smudged with a little bit of dirt, and her stormy eyes were alight, shining. Her reddish blonde hair was matted and limp, falling around her in an almost noble way. She was pretty, but it was clear that she was rididng the same wave as the rest of the humans. Lucky for her, though, she was one of the few humans who remained unattatched to an angel or a demon. This was one thing she felt exceptionally proud of. Her soul was still hers to keep. Her attacker made no noise, but shuffled closer, breathing heavily. "What?" She used one word, but it said so much. The tone was slightly fearful, but dripping with hate, and it stood firm. She wouldn't back down.

NOW I'M CLOSER TO THE EDGENO I'M NOT SAYING I'M SORRY, ONE DAY MAYBE WE'LL MEET AGAIN- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Lucian. I'm cold." Jamie stated expectantly to the tall, shadow of a man beside him, gripping his arms with his hands. As the sun sank behind the outlines of the city, cut ragged and ugly against the purple sky, the temperature dropped below what was comfortable for a light sweater. And even though the day had been unseasonably warm, being cold made Jamie unhappy and uncomfortable. As prompted, Lucian removed his coat, draping it over Jamie's slender shoulders in a careful fashion. Nodding his head, Jamie gripped the jacket and hopped off the rock he was standing on, into the filthy road.
"My apologies, young master. We've lingered too long here. Are you well enough to walk back to our lodgings?" Lucian crooned, his dark voice atypical to his slender, sinewy frame. He too jumped off the rock, but landed with a soft grace which could only remark him as an ethereal being. That and his astoundingly sharp features. And while Jamie was a rather handsome young man, next to Lucian he appeared almost ruddy. Jamie sighed, walking down the path stiffly. Even though his legs were sore and his toes were cold, he couldn't stand to have Lucian carry him. The demon was so fast; it made Jamie motion-sick whenever Lucian rushed him around. Shaking his head, the teenage boy went without.
"I'm fine. Come along now." Jamie ordered, Lucian following along like a good dog. To anyone who knew of deities, the scene was laughable. A simple human boy ordering his Leviathan around like a servant - and a such demon who was quick to obey. Needless to say, Lucian's own personal amusement shown in the faint grin to his gaunt face wherever he went. However, after a few paces, something caught Lucian's attention, causing him to stop in the middle of the lane and to stare off in the direction of an old, dilapidated house. Jamie continued a few steps before noticing, stopping to look at Lucian with a quizzical expression. "What's there, Lucian?"
"Master. I'm very hungry." Lucian commented, his whole body starting to bristle with some unseen and terrible force. Jamie swallowed his innermost fear of Lucian and nodded shyly. "There's two people from what I can hear. A scuffle of some sort." Lucian's dark voice crooned, licking his lips as his mouth watered. Jamie looked up at the building and then back at his demon before reluctantly nodding. Giving the charge of death always made his stomach feel like it was knotting. Was it guilt? Naturally. He was human. Not like Lucian who could kill violently with relish.
"Devour the guilty party, Lucian." Jamie sighed, wincing a little.
In a flash, Lucian was gone, flying headlong into the abandoned house. It didn't take Lucian long to condemn his prey - a wild-eyed man holding a knife to a young woman. Blinded by hunger, Lucian's claw-like hands grabbed the man by the back of his neck, pulling him back into the darkness - the man shrieking like some sort of animal. The once composed and subtle treacherous demon was now very ugly, turning the hysterical human over onto his back with ease. Tearing open the shirt to reveal his sternum and chest, beneath which his heart beat wildly, Lucian growled lowly, eyes glinting a violent red in the darkness.
"Don't watch!" Jamie called, reaching to turn the girl away from Lucian to face him. He had seen the scene one time too many. The way Lucian would pull open the man's ribs and flesh, alive and all, to reveal the gruesome beating heart. Each demon and angel had their own fashion to feast. Lucian would bite into the organ, rubicund blood soaking the floor, and in doing so would consume the soul into his own being as the human slowly died. So slowly. Jamie's knees rattled slightly, begging the girl with his eyes not to watch until the screams died away and Lucian had finished. The sight was too terrible to stomach - Jamie had vomited for hours the first time he ever saw. But then he was eleven years old.

Harley was about to open her mouth once more, and continue to speak. The knife was brought a little closer, and she had just about had it with this nonsense. Why would a human have the need to attack another anyway? The times brought them to this, and it was cruel and harsh. Her stormy eyes flickered to the man with the knife- and no more then a moment later the man was thrown to the side by what had to be a demon. The man screamed loudly, and Harley backed away a step, eyes wide. What was going on? Frantically she twisted around, but met the gaze of another human, one who looked sick to his stomach.
Don't watch! The boy reached out, attempting to turn her away from the scene. She had no intention of watching anyway, and willingly complied. She stared at the boy, her gaze confused and frightened, and she could tell he himself wasn't too hot at the moment. he shook slightly, and Harley blinked, shaking her head. "What the hell ..." She muttered, listening as the screams died away. Shuddering she could just imagine what had gone on behind her, out of eyesight. Taking a deep breath, she met the eyes of the boy and then backed up a pace, turning to take in the scene after the action had taken place. Her stomach lurched, but she kept looking.
It was one of those sights you couldn't take your eyes off of, no matter how much you wanted to. She saw blood streaming, and the corpse of the man who had attempted to ... to do what to her? What were his intentions anyway? Harley choked a cry and turned away, moments too late. She wished she had never even turned to see the result of the attack. She didn't know who these people were, the boy who seemed so shaky and the demon, but they both had done something terrible- and yet something grand. "Thanks." She managed, looking the boy straight in the eye, and wincing as she turned to face the demon as well, gazing at him as steadily as she could before her sight flickered away once more.
She didn't know what to say now. Manners told her to introduce herself, and having no better idea at the moment, that is what Harley did. "Name's Harley." She said, leaving about the last name. They needn't know that now. If there was one thing that she had learned on the streets, it was that even a saviour may have cruel intentions, and it was always best to give as little information as possible. Still shaken from the sight and the sounds, she backed against the wall and slid down, sitting on the ground and hanging her head. Boy, she was tired. Tired mentally and physically. Blinking slowly, she let out a long breath and hummed under her breath. It was a hum-tune her mum sang for her during rough times when she was younger, and it brought her to a happy medium.

NOW I'M CLOSER TO THE EDGENO I'M NOT SAYING I'M SORRY, ONE DAY MAYBE WE'LL MEET AGAIN- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jamie stared back at the girl, trying to ignore the gruesome scene behind them. The coppery smell wafted through the air, the smell of fresh gore which maddened Lucian like a carrion fowl. Jamie could taste it in his mouth, which made him woozy. His large blue eyes stared at the girl, concentrating on her features. The way the light shown from behind him, illuminating her delicate features, she looked like an angel dressed in white. He wanted to fix her vibrant hair and wipe the mud from her face, if only to comfort himself. But he refrained. Doing such a thing would be too weird in such a situation. He consoled himself by focusing on her beauty rather than the ugliness which snarled from the darkness.
Once Lucian had finished feasting he arose from the mess, dripping with hot blood. Wiping it away from his mouth with his sleeve, he licked each finger as if to relish the taste. Jamie had no idea what souls tasted like. But Lucian had told him on many occasions "Better than anything in the world and then some." With all that blood and gore Jamie couldn't imagine how such a thing could taste better than chocolate or peanut butter; but he supposed he had to be a demon to enjoy such a thing. "N-no, don't.." Jamie muttered, but it was too late. The girl turned and saw the destruction. The murder which Jamie himself had condoned. And even though that person could've been someone terrible - a rapist, or another murderer, even, it still affected Jamie in a most unsettling manner.
"You're... welcome?" Jamie's voice strained for the words. How could someone just thank him for murder? Was saving her truly worth the life of another? Jamie sighed, rubbing his aching head in his hand. So much guilt, slamming against his conscious like waves on rock. Looking through his fingers, he peered at Lucian through the darkness. The demon had done a good enough job of cleaning himself off; his eyes had returned to their normal blue color and the blood stains glinted faintly off his black clothes. And even though the monster was full, he stared from under his heavy eyelids at the young woman - unaffiliated and vulnerable. Fortunately for her, Jamie would never condone unreasonable slaughter.
"Harley..." Jamie nodded and repeated awkwardly, such introductions so strange to take place within feet of a dead body. "I'm Jamie and that's Lucian... Sorry about... all this..." Jamie sighed, glancing around before watching the girl move away. She seemed shaken and a little pale, sliding down the wall weakly to sit. Afraid that she would fall unconscious by some unseen injury, Jamie cautiously squatted down by her side, watching as she hummed a strange tune. A strange... comforting tune. "Hey..." he spoke up softly, "Let's go into another room... Can you walk?" Jamie offered his assistance, holding out a hand to help.
Meanwhile, Lucian grumbled and sulked in the background, walking a little closer out of curiosity to observe the girl and his master's strangely nice behavior. Crossing his arms over his chest, Lucian stood, looking down his nose at them. "Young master... I hate to interrupt; but if we don't leave now we won't reach our lodgings at a reasonable hour." Lucian informed him coldly. Jamie glared up at Lucian boldly, instinctively protecting the poor girl. "Shut up, Lucian! Go make yourself useful and find some water for her, idiot!" Jamie spat. Lucian gave him a defiant look before eventually turning away, jumping out the window and disappearing into the night.
Jamie released a sigh of relief, calming his nerves and frantically beating heart. He looked at Harley softly. "Come on."

Harley blinked and turned to face the boy as he crouched next to her. What, was he afraid she'd keel over or something? If she was her normal self, and not in the rather shaky and stunned mood she was in now, she'd have a word or two for him. But she was tired, and had no will to start anything right now. So his name was Jamie ... He seemed like a nice boy. Nodding in response to his question she got to her feet and sniffed, noticing that the air around still held that metallic tinge. "I can walk." She said in response to Jamie's hand, smiling in weak amusement. Starting toward the next room she paused, hearing the demon speak. She froze and blinked, feeling his eyes on her. Her gaze flickered over to him, and she bit her lip, her face pale.
Jamie spoke harshly, though, and the demon ... obeyed him. Confused by this action that defied all she thought was true, Harley paused in her tracks, before shaking her head slightly and continuing into the next room. Once she was there, she stood in the centre of the room and let out a logn breath that she hadn't known she'd been holding in. So many things had happened since she tried to just get into this house. She was attacked, saw an attack, heard the cries of a murder, and now found herself shaky and unsure of what to do. She looked over her shoulder to face the boy, Jamie, who had sent the demon away to get water. "He obeys you?" She inquired, full turning around to face him.
He was a good looking boy, with strong features and impeccable skin. His eyes were soft, and seemed to betray every emotion he was feeling. He was more together with his appearance, namely he was clean and well taken care of. Instantly she felt like scum, with the dirt smeared on her face, her matted hair, and her ragged cotton dress that once had been a beautiful white, though it had faded to a grayish tinge. Self concious now, she stood awkwardly, very unsure of what to do or what to say. Maybe she'd just stay silent and let Jamie talk first. So, in silence, Harley was left alone with her thoughts. These thoughts nagged at her and she grew more and more agitated. Worked up, she didn't notice a single tear fall down her cheek until it had reached her chin. Furiously, she wiped it away and faced the window, unwilling to explain. Not that she needed to anyway, the boy should know why.

NOW I'M CLOSER TO THE EDGENO I'M NOT SAYING I'M SORRY, ONE DAY MAYBE WE'LL MEET AGAIN- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Okay, cool." Jamie nodded in response as Harley rose to her feet, pulling his useless hand back awkwardly. He felt... weird. Being around a girl his age. Suddenly he felt so clumsy and dumb and self conscious... How could he be so pulled together against a malevolent demon and yet, a single weak grin could make him feel so out of place? Standing, Jamie dusted himself off, glancing up fretfully as she made her way over to the next room. Come to think of it, Lucian always did such a careful job of not promoting teenage behavior or the accumulation of friends. But then again, Jamie didn't even consider himself as a teenager. Stupid random hormones. Lucian and his perverseness practically made Jamie forget what it was like to be straight.
Once Lucian was dealt with and well on his way to finding water, Jamie turned and followed Harley into the next room quietly. He glanced around, making sure it was really empty, leering at the shadows. Even though he would never admit it, Jamie felt extremely vulnerable without Lucian around. Fragile, even. Which was an intriguing feeling. It was the feeling of being free and mortal. He sighed, looking at Harley haplessly as she questioned him. Needless to say, he got that a lot from people. "Yeah. He's... weird like that." Jamie gave the usual, unsettling response. Truth be told, Jamie didn't know what he would do if Lucian ever turned against him. Jamie could only hold the feast of a soul over Lucian's head for so long, especially since the Leviathan had very little reason to get any stronger. Swallowing hard, Jamie shifted, toying with his oversized jacket.
Jamie was out of words to say, standing in the strange silence, staring at her. Should he explain? Apologize more? Tell a joke? The silence engulfed them, deafening and loud. But Jamie's expression fell from speechlessness to concern as a crystalline tear accentuated her cheek. She rushed away to the window, trying to hide her... well, a number of things. Fear. Anger. Hopelessness. Jamie swayed, he wanted to hug her, but couldn't bring himself to do it. Instead he stepped over to the window and sat on the sill, mindful of the broken glass. He stared down at the ground, trying not to look at her if she didn't want him to. "It's okay..." He tried to console, talking softly, "You're safe now. We won't hurt you." Jamie stared at the floorboard, exhausted.
"I've got water and chocolate." Lucian's dark voice crooned from the doorway, his magnificent face peeking in. He had changed, of course, into a loose white blouse and a pair of rugged jeans. Jamie didn't regard him. Walking in, Lucian set down the bottles and candy bars down on a withered table, shrinking away to sit on the floor on the opposite side of the room. He had cooled off and recomposed himself in such a short amount of time, content to wait for his master and his little friend however long it took. Studying his nails, Lucian busied himself so not to appear nosy, but he was listening quite keenly to every word.

Harley was sure that the single tear was the only one that fell from her eyes. She blinked away her sudden urge to run back to her mother, to home, and let out a long breath. There was no way she'd ever be able to return home, not with Mum the way she is. It was a shame, really, that her mother had lost herself to such a state. She wasn't always like that, not really. But it was long in coming, and Harley barely registered sadness when it did. She simply left, never to come home again. She glanced at Jamie, a her mouth twisted into a crooked frown as she blinked her stormy gray-blue eyes. "I had figured as much." She replied simply, straightening herself and pausing in mid-stretch when the demon's voice sounded from the doorway.
I've got water and chocolate. Though she aws still somewhat wary of the demon, she perked up at the words he spoke. Chocolate? Why, she loved chocolate! Turning her face toward him, she grinned like a little child on Christmas morning. A rush of hope flowed through her and she forgot her momentary loss of happiness completely. She could tell the room still held a tense and not-quite-content atmosphere. She put her hands on her hips and her gaze flickered from Jamie to the demon, named Lucian if she remembered correctly. "The aura in this room is way to melancholy." She pointed out, raising her index finger and leaning forward, her eyes twinkling. "You know what is best for moments like these?" She inquired rhetorically, smirking.
Without explaining, she twirled and slid this way, spinning and jumping that way. She knew she might not have been the best dancer, but who cared? These people were not content and the one thing she wanted to do at the moment was make them content, if possible. She'd do all she could to try at least. Harley only knew art and creativity, so she was honestly putting full effort into it. And the lingering sorrow inside of her melted away with each step to the dance she preformed. Pausing in her moves, she shrugged, her cheeks smarting a rosy pink. "Well, it works for me anyway." She explained.

NOW I'M CLOSER TO THE EDGENO I'M NOT SAYING I'M SORRY, ONE DAY MAYBE WE'LL MEET AGAIN- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jamie blinked at her reply, as it was something he was not expecting her to say. Well, he didn't know what he was expecting her to say exactly, perhaps something more stereotypically girly and "damsel in distress"ish. God, he had to get out more. At least she smiled, so it wasn't like she was being mean or anything. Jamie nodded, finally bringing himself to stand up and walk over to the little table, picking up a candy bar. Lucian was a good boy after all, Jamie considered, giving the monster a few quiet brownie points. Needless to say, Jamie loved chocolate, but not as much as the girl seemed to, her mood changing drastically.
Lucian looked at her with eyebrows raised, frozen by her brilliant smile, wondering why humans were so strange. Lucian looked from the girl to Jamie, and then back to the girl, everyone's eyes seeming to question each other with no definite answer. Jamie's eyes widened as the girl began to dance and twirl, in time to some inaudable music. He froze and watched her, terrified move or make a sound. How could someone dance at such a time like this? They were supposed to be melancholy - someone just died for Christ's sakes and the world was going to hell! Shifting uncomfortably, Jamie nibbled on his chocolate bar, watching her with mystified eyes. He could feel Lucian's wide grin from the other side of the room.
"Oh, that's nice... yeah..." Jamie nodded as she came to a stop, noticing how much happier she looked. Could that really work? With barely a sound, Lucian arose to his feet, twirling gracefully on his clunky leather boots, stopping to extend his delicate hand out to Jamie and bowing slightly like some sort of Regency gentleman. "May I have this dance, Master?" A gentle smirk settled on his face, Jamie questioning the hand with suspicion. Indignantly shaking his head Jamie turned away slightly in refusal, biting into his candy bar whole-heartedly. "Thanks but no thanks Lucian. I'm still mad at you."
"Mad at me for something you allowed me to do?" Lucian chuckled darkly, standing and retracting his hand. Jamie rolled his eyes, sulking silently. They both understood that Jamie wasn't mad at Lucian directly, but at the whole system of things. Stubborn, Jamie wouldn't admit his error of wrong, and he didn't need to because Lucian continued to look over his young master with an expression of care, regardless of any injustice. The monster's steel blue eyes looked to the girl and shrugged. "My Master's content to wallow in his own aura at the risk of stepping on my toes. I apologize. Your dance was quite lovely."

Harley gazed at Jamie, trying to figure out the wide eyed look. Coming to the conclusion that he was simply just confused, she folded her arms over her chest and tilted her head slightly to one side. "In a world like this, sometimes you need to just let go." She said seriously, belief strong in her words. She had remembered when she left home, and all was going downhill. She had been starving, exhausted, and on top of it all- lonely. Skinny as she was, dirty too, she sat down on the side of the road and simply cried, unable to understand anything more than self-pity. She spent that night crying her worries away, and when she woke up the next morning she realized she felt no better. She was empty, like a walking ghost simply held together by the tears she shed.
And the epiphany hit her like a ton of bricks, almost knocking her backward. Literally. A man twenty years elder to her and not been looking where he was going, and rammed headfirst into her. Her eyes were blurred from weeping, and she stopped, blinking at this man. Why must you cry? He had asked her, wiping a tear away. The world only seems bad to those who ignore the small miracles. It could always be worse. And those were the last words he said to her before wakling away. She never saw him again, but she never needed to. Those words were enough to strike a lightbulb on in her head. He was right. If all you did was mourn the losses, how could you ever notice the gains?
It seemed that Lucian understood her way of thinking, for he had attempted to dance, though Jamie shot him down. Biting her lower lip, Harley gazed at him as he bit into his chocolate bar. When Lucian spoke, her gaze flickered to the demon, and she smiled. "No need for apologizing for feelings. And feelings that weren't even your own!" She replied, letting her arms drop to her sides. "And thank you." She added under her breath.

NOW I'M CLOSER TO THE EDGENO I'M NOT SAYING I'M SORRY, ONE DAY MAYBE WE'LL MEET AGAIN- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Just let go? Jamie looked down pathetically. Easy enough for her to say. She didn't have an ever-present reminder that she was going directly to Hell for the rest of eternity. Jamie glared resentfully at Lucian. His protector. His savior. The only creature on this Earth that Jamie unwillingly cared for just because they had been together for six crazy years. And as much as Jamie loathed Lucian and wanted him to die, Jamie could not ignore the pang of unreasonable love and care which struck him at such times of loneliness. Just let go. Wasn't that what Lucian was trying to get him to do all along? Accept his fate and indulge in it? Jamie sighed, a headache brewing in his temples.
Lucian smiled at the girl, a sweet smile not unlike the grin of a playful, yet vicious, dog. His eyes studied her, dissatisfied by her grubby appearance. "You need soap." The demon observed, at no surprise to Jamie who knew all too well of Lucian's odd fascination with soap and laundry detergent. Jamie sighed and held out an unopened candy bar towards Harley, rolling his eyes. "He's an idiot. Here. It's good." Jamie offered, feeling a little better at the expense of raising his blood sugar. Or maybe the girl's cheery, cheeky mood was just infectious. Needless to say, Jamie was a little more light, producing a small smile.
"Young Master. If you intend to host this girl in our company, allow me to go make arrangements for her..." Lucian looked down his nose at the girl condescendingly, "A bath, change of clothes, and sheets are in order." Jamie sighed, shrugging haplessly as he looked to the girl, exhaustion weighing in the shadows of his eyes. "You're welcome to join us, Harley, if you want. Lucian's more than capable of getting whatever you need." Jamie offered politely, wondering whether or not she would trust them or be so stubborn as to continue on her own way without help. Some people just didn't like to be around demons, so he couldn't really blame her if she refused.

Silence surrounded the trio for a short while, and Harley grew somewhat uncomfortable, fidgeting. When the silence was broken, it was Lucian who spoke. You need soap. He told her, and if Harley had been a cat she'd be bristling by now. Well! She thought indignantly, pursing her lips and frowning. Still, she said nothing, but when Jamie spoke, she turned to face him and reached for the chocolate bar, her fingers accidentally touching his. Startled for a moment, she retracted her hand swiftly with the chocolate bar, before blinking and shaking her head inwardly. Peeling open the wrapper, she quietly munched on the sweet-tasting milky goodness.
When care was offered for her, including a bath and clean clothes, she stopped in mid-bite, her eyes flickered to gaze at the duo. So ... they'd actually offer that to someone at a time like this? Well, when times were so bad and all. Raising an eyebrow she thought for a moment, continuing to eat her chocolate, with her gaze still fixed on Lucian and Jamie. Sure, she was stubborn, and she could very easily continue on by herself ... But she wasn't stupid. She needed some assistance as of right now. And besides, she had an itching feeling she'd enjoy this company. Blinking she lowered her eyebrow and swallowed her last bite of chocolate. "I'll join you, thank you for the kind offer!" She replied cheerily, grinning.
